The health care system was reformed by this law enacted in March 2010. Before Obamacare, health insurance was unaffordable and unavailable for many.
Today, if you meet specific qualifications, the government will help pay for your monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs. And those who have pre-existing medical conditions can no longer be denied coverage under Obamacare.
There are three main goals of this law:
- Make health insurance more affordable and readily available to a greater number of people. The law equips consumers with subsidies (aka “premium tax credits”) that reduce costs for households with incomes of up to 400% of the federally defined poverty level.
- Make the Medicaid program include all adults whose income is less than 138% of the federal poverty level.
- Back innovative methods of delivering medical care which were designed to lower health care costs.
In Colorado, Medicaid expansion went into effect on January 1, 2014.
