History of Buena Vista

The natives of Buena Vista are Ute Indians just like in many other small towns in Colorado. In 1725, explorers set foot on this area, and they settled here. Sometime around 1860 in Denver, they found the gold mine, and because of that, later on, many people migrated to Buena Vista.

Officially, Buena Vista became a town in 1879, and approximately three years after founding it, they got a courthouse and jail.

Buena Vista boasted three railroads which had junctions in town. Several years later, in 1888, the city of Buena Vista got electricity. Five years later, people started using telephones. After the end of the mining era, people settled in this region because the level of water of Arkansas River elevated.

How the Name Came to Be

Buena Vista is Spanish for a “beautiful view,” but it is not pronounced as one might think. Namely, the first three letters of “Buena” are pronounced as “beau” from “beautiful,” and that has been the case from the town’s foundation. That has been decided at the meeting that took place in 1879 with the idea of forming a community. Townspeople picked two names — one of them was Collegiate Peaks, which was chosen because of the surrounding mountains — and they later decided to go with Buena Vista.
